Protest Held in Lucknow Against Transgender Amendment Bill; Memorandum Submitted to President
Lucknow, March 29, 2026
A protest was held in Lucknow on Sunday against the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026. Participants, including members of the queer community and other citizens, marched from Begum Hazrat Mahal Park Gate, Parivartan Chowk, to KD Singh Babu Stadium Metro Station, where a memorandum addressed to the President of India was submitted.
According to the organizers, the march was intended to raise concerns about the provisions of the Bill and its potential impact. The protest was coordinated by Shantam Nidhi and led by several community members and participants. Various student and civil society organizations, including AISA, SFI, BAPSA BBAU, AIPWA, Jan Sanskriti Manch, and CITU, were present in support.
During the march, participants raised slogans related to rights, identity, and constitutional protections.
Speakers at the protest expressed strong opposition to the Bill, describing it as a measure that, in their view, increases state involvement in matters of gender identity.
Payal said:
“This Bill seeks to take away our identity from our own hands and place it under state control.”
Guddan stated:
“If we do not resist today, tomorrow every citizen’s rights can be affected in similar ways.”
Priyanka said:
“The NALSA judgment guaranteed our rights. This Bill, in our view, undermines those protections.”
Yadavendra added:
“The manner in which this Bill was passed raises concerns about the legislative process and consultation.”
Other speakers expressed similar concerns regarding rights, representation, and the implications of the Bill.
According to the organizers, the memorandum submitted to the President outlines several objections to the Bill. These include concerns about provisions related to gender identification procedures, recognition criteria, and potential implications for equality and personal liberty. The memorandum also raises questions about the legislative process followed in passing the Bill. These claims have not been independently verified.
Participants stated that they intend to continue raising awareness and engaging with the issue through further discussions and mobilization.
