What I Wish I Knew Before University

Taking admission to university has been a truly humbling experience for many people I know. As you step into this new chapter of life, you may find yourself on a roller coaster of emotions.

There is excitement about beginning something new, curiosity about the opportunities that lie ahead, nervousness about meeting professors, and anticipation of forming meaningful friendships. For some, it may even feel like stepping into an entirely unfamiliar world where everything appears both thrilling and intimidating at the same time.

You arrive with the intention of reinventing yourself, determined not to repeat the mistakes you may have made during your school years. In the beginning, adapting to a new academic environment can feel challenging. Understanding course structures, managing schedules, and keeping up with responsibilities often takes time. However, with patience and perseverance, you gradually find your footing. The transition from school to university is not merely a change in educational institutions; it is a transformation in responsibilities, independence, and perspective.

During my first few weeks, I remember walking around campus trying to find the correct classroom and constantly checking timetables because I was afraid of ending up in the wrong place. Looking back, those moments seem amusing, but at the time they felt overwhelming. Experiences like these are far more common than most students realize.

Beyond academics, many students enter university with expectations of building lifelong friendships and becoming part of large social circles. Social media and popular culture often portray campus life as a period filled with endless fun, unforgettable adventures, and inseparable friend groups. While such experiences certainly exist, they do not always unfold exactly as we imagine. Friendships take time to develop, and meaningful connections are often built through shared experiences rather than instant bonds.

As you settle into university, there are a few common mistakes worth avoiding. Consider these a few words of advice from a senior to a junior.

If you’re one of those students who attend practicals only to mark attendance and then disappear from lectures, I understand because I used to do the same. I often skipped lectures and relied on last-minute studying before examinations. However, I soon realized that avoiding lectures does not save as much time as it seems. Instead, it increases your workload and often creates unnecessary stress.

Missing out on my practical classes was the biggest mistake because u can’t cover those up in the last minutes u need practical skills to perform tha practicals.

I hope you don’t do what I did!

Many assignments become significantly easier when you attend lectures regularly. Faculty members share important instructions, updates, and explanations that may not be available elsewhere. Missing these details can leave you struggling to gather information later.

Regular attendance also helps you discover opportunities beyond academics. Universities constantly organize events, competitions, workshops, and cultural programmes that many students miss simply because they are not present on campus often enough.

Some of the societies offered at Lucknow University include:

– PRAAN – Cultural Society

– LU Chronicles – Independent Student-Run Daily

– LU Litcore – Literary Society

– Black Monarchs – Fashion Society

– Kaavyom – Cultural Preservation Society

I am still discovering new societies and opportunities. Perhaps we can continue exploring them together.

So, don’t skip lectures assuming they have little value. I made that mistake many times, and it often left me confused and unaware of important developments happening around me.

Most importantly, university is not just about academics. It is also about the people you meet, the conversations you have, and the memories you create. When you disengage from campus life, it can feel as though you’re simply travelling between home and university without truly experiencing either. While not every friendship lasts forever, the genuine ones often remain among the most valuable parts of the journey.

University is far from perfect, but that is precisely what makes it such a meaningful experience. It teaches lessons that extend far beyond classrooms and textbooks, lessons about resilience, friendship, independence, and self-discovery. The journey may include challenges, uncertainties, and occasional disappointments, but it also offers countless opportunities for growth.

In the end, university is not just about earning a degree; it is about becoming a wiser, stronger, and more confident version of yourself. Years from now, you may forget some lectures and assignments, but you will remember the people, the experiences, and the lessons that helped shape who you became.

To every freshman reading this: welcome to the journey, and all the best for your university life.
