Students Raise Concerns Over Lal Baradari Sealing; Seek Administrative Clarification and Review

Student organisations at the University of Lucknow have raised concerns regarding the sealing of Lal Baradari and have called for administrative clarification, disclosure of relevant documents, and an independent review of the matter. Some organisations have also demanded the resignation of the Registrar and registration of an FIR in connection with the issue.

According to student representatives, on 22 February 2026 the gates of Lal Baradari- described by them as a 200-year-old historical structure that has been used for offering namaz- were welded shut. They further stated that fencing was erected at the site during the month of Ramzan. Students have claimed that no written executive order, public notice, or structural inspection report was shown to them at the time of sealing.

The university administration has reportedly stated that the structure’s condition is “not good.” Student organisations have responded by requesting disclosure of any scientific structural assessment or technical report supporting this claim. They have also sought clarification regarding ₹5 crore reportedly sanctioned under the PM-USHA scheme for preservation and maintenance of the structure.

Students state that during 22-23 February they requested access to relevant documentation. They allege that instead of dialogue, police deployment increased and cases were filed against certain students. They have also raised concerns about the entry of external groups on campus during the same period.

In a meeting held on 23 February, student representatives claim that the Registrar stated she was not the competent authority to take certain decisions related to the site. Students have questioned the administrative process under which the fencing and sealing were carried out.

Speaking on the matter:

Samar, AISA, said that students view the issue as one concerning administrative transparency and procedural accountability, and reiterated the demand for disclosure of written orders and reports.

Ahmad Raza Khan, NSUI, stated that students were seeking dialogue and documentation to better understand the basis of the decision.

Mahendra Yadav, SCS, emphasised the need for institutional mechanisms to address grievances and referred to frameworks such as the UGC Equity Regulations 2026.

Student organisations have reiterated the following demands:

  • Publication of any executive order related to the sealing of Lal Baradari.
  • Disclosure of any structural inspection or technical report.
  • Clarification regarding utilisation of funds under the PM-USHA scheme.
  • Withdrawal of cases and disciplinary proceedings issued in connection with the protests.
  • Formation of an independent review committee with student representation.
  • Reopening of Lal Baradari if no immediate structural risk is established.

Some organisations have additionally called for the resignation of the Registrar and legal review of the administrative action taken.

Students stated that they intend to continue pursuing the matter through peaceful and lawful means.
