Miles Away, Yet At Home: The Journey of Foreign Exchange Students at Lucknow University

You must have noticed many unfamiliar faces around the university. People who may not know our culture, language, or traditions, yet slowly become a part of our campus life. They are the foreign exchange students.

In classrooms where accents differ but curiosity remains the same, these students bring diverse perspectives and experiences from different parts of the world. For many of us, the university is only a few kilometres away from home, but for them, it is thousands of miles away.

You might wonder what an exchange program actually is. It is an educational program in which students study in another country or institution for a temporary period while continuing their academic learning and cultural exploration.

Let us dive deeper into the experiences of these students in our university. To understand what life feels like for foreign exchange students, I spoke with a few of them. Although every individual had a unique story to share, many of their experiences carried similar emotions of excitement, curiosity, adaptation, and belonging.

Why did they choose Lucknow University?

Some said it was because of the university’s good academic reputation, quality education, diverse environment, and better opportunities for personal and professional growth. For some, they simply chose it over other available options, but eventually found much more than they had expected.

How do they feel here?

They feel happy and grateful to be here. For some, especially the female students, it was an experience of more independence compared to how they lived in their own countries. Others shared that this university gradually became their second home — a place where they gained confidence, knowledge, friendships, and new experiences.

How is their hostel life?

Most of them are hostellers who reside in the university hostels. Initially, it was uneasy for many of them to settle here, but as time passed, they became more comfortable, and the addition of friends made the experience more joyful and memorable.

One of the students shared:

“Hostel life feels interesting and memorable because I get to meet students from different places and backgrounds. It has taught me independence, responsibility, and how to adjust with others. Sometimes I miss home, but overall it is a good experience.”

Have they ever faced any discrimination?

Most of them shared that they had not faced discrimination. They found people here generally supportive, welcoming, and respectful towards one another.

Any language barrier? Any issue with the professors?

One student explained:

“At first, there was a small language barrier because students come from different regions, but with time communication became easier. I have not faced any serious issue with the professors; they are helpful and approachable whenever I need guidance.”

Now, let us talk about the issues they wish to see resolved.

“Yes, there are several aspects that I believe could be improved in order to create a more comfortable and inclusive environment for international students at the University of Lucknow.

Firstly, the hostel facilities require considerable improvement. While hostel life is memorable because of the unity among students, the quality of facilities does not adequately correspond to the rent being charged. Better maintenance, hygiene, and infrastructure would greatly enhance students’ living conditions.

“Secondly, I feel that some office staff members and a few teachers do not always treat international students with the level of consideration and understanding they may require while adapting to a foreign academic environment. Greater sensitivity and support toward international students would make communication and administrative processes much smoother.

“Another important issue is language accessibility in classrooms. Since many international students are not fluent in Hindi, it would be extremely beneficial if lectures were conducted primarily in English or at least bilingually. This would help students understand lessons more effectively and participate confidently in academic discussions.

“In addition, some university buildings and classrooms are not in very good condition and would benefit from renovation and proper maintenance. A well-maintained academic environment contributes positively to students’ motivation and learning experience.

“There is also a lake on campus that possesses significant natural beauty, but unfortunately it does not appear to receive adequate care or maintenance. With proper attention, it could become one of the most attractive and peaceful places within the university.

“Lastly, I feel that the quality of food in the canteen should be improved. In many cases, the prices are relatively high compared to the quality and hygiene standards being provided. Better food quality at reasonable prices would greatly benefit students, especially those living in hostels.

“Despite these concerns, I still value my experience here because the university has provided me with cultural exposure, friendships, and important academic opportunities.”

Although they face such challenges, what stands out more is their willingness to adapt and embrace a completely different environment. From unfamiliar languages to hostel life far away from home, foreign exchange students continue to contribute to the cultural diversity and vibrancy of the university.

Their journeys remind us that education is not limited to classrooms alone — sometimes, it is also found in conversations, cultural exchanges, shared struggles, and the feeling of finding home in a place once unknown.
